The OSG 1405009608 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting - displacing material rather than removing chips. Sized for 5/16-24 UNF threads and configured with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, it is built from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating for improved wear resistance and surface hardness. With an overall length of 2.719 inches and a tapping depth of 1.126 inches, this tap is engineered for blind hole threading where thread depth must be maximized close to the bottom of the hole. Machinists and tool-room technicians in production and maintenance environments install this tap in CNC machining centers and manual tap handles.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, it carries material application codes P, M, and N - covering the most common workpiece materials in general machining and toolroom applications. The bottoming chamfer allows threads to be formed as close to the base of a blind hole as the geometry permits, making it well suited for close-tolerance production work where thread runout must be minimized. A right-hand thread direction and H6 thread limit support controlled fit and repeatable results in medium to tight tolerance assemblies.

Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size - do not use a standard cut-tap drill diameter, as the hole must be slightly larger to allow material displacement. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is driven perpendicular to the hole axis to prevent thread distortion or tap breakage. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless or hardened steel. Blind hole depth should be verified to provide adequate chip-free clearance beyond the intended thread depth before tapping begins.
