The OSG 1405008508 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-form threading in a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Unlike cutting taps, this tool displaces material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) and finished with a TiCN coating, it delivers extended tool life in demanding production environments. The bottoming chamfer (1 to 1.5 thread lead) allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. This tap is part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series, a line engineered specifically for chipless thread forming in blind hole applications.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It is commonly used in CNC machining centers and manual tapping setups where clean chip-free threads are required. The right-hand thread direction and H6 thread limit make it appropriate for standard UNC thread tolerance applications in general manufacturing, tooling, and precision machining environments. Licensed machinists and tooling specialists handling production threading operations are the primary users.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N per ISO classification. Part of OSG Series 14050 (EXOTAP VP-NRT).
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling professionals familiar with thread forming tap requirements. Thread forming taps require a larger pilot hole diameter than cutting taps - always consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart for the correct pilot hole size before use. Ensure the tapping spindle and workpiece are properly aligned to avoid tap breakage. Use a lubricant or cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material to maintain coating integrity and extend tool life.
