The OSG 1405008108 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting or removing material. It produces a 1/4-28 UNF right-hand thread using a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of blind bores. Manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap delivers high wear resistance and extended tool life across a range of workpiece materials. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a shank diameter of 0.255 inches. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in CNC, manual, and hand-tapping applications.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. Its thread-forming action displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger threads with no chips to clear from the bore. Typical applications include precision fastener holes in machined components, tooling plates, and structural assemblies where thread integrity and blind-hole depth control are critical. The H5 thread limit designation suits close-tolerance fits commonly required in production and maintenance machining environments.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N confirm suitability across ferrous and non-ferrous metals as defined by the EXOTAP VP-NRT series specifications.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a tapping head, CNC spindle, or tap wrench with appropriate torque control. Power down and lock out any machine tool before setting up tooling or changing taps. Use a compatible tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to protect the coating and extend tool life. Do not use coolant-through setups, as this tap does not support through-coolant.
