The OSG 1405005708 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in a wide range of metals. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger, smoother threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating to extend tool life under demanding conditions. It carries a 10-32 UNF thread form with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, making it suitable for tapping close to the bottom of a blind hole. Class of fit is 3B with a thread limit of H4. Machinists and tooling technicians in production and job shop environments are the primary users.
This tap is suited for threading blind holes in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. The bottoming chamfer design allows thread engagement very close to the bottom of a drilled hole, which is critical in applications where thread depth is constrained by part geometry. It is part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series, engineered specifically for form tapping in difficult-to-machine materials. Right-hand thread direction is standard. Typical applications include precision machined components in aerospace, automotive, and industrial manufacturing environments.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Material application codes P, M, and N. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series (Series 14050).
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size larger than a standard cut tap drill — consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material; dry tapping is not recommended. Secure the workpiece firmly and use a calibrated torque-controlled tapping attachment or CNC rigid tapping cycle where possible to avoid tap breakage. Inspect the pilot hole depth before tapping to confirm adequate clearance beyond the required thread depth.
