The OSG 1405005008 is a bottoming-style thread forming tap designed for producing 10-24 UNC internal threads without cutting a chip. Manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap cold-forms threads by displacing material rather than removing it, resulting in stronger threads and longer tool life. It carries an H5 thread limit and is engineered for right-hand threading in blind hole applications. With an overall length of 2.375 inches and a tapping depth of 0.866 inches, it is suited for precision threading in tight-tolerance assemblies across industrial and mechanical trade work.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading operations across a range of metals including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The bottoming chamfer, with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. It is commonly used by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals working with metal fabrication, equipment repair, and precision assembly applications.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 10-24 UNC internal threads. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series, Series 14050.
Thread forming taps require a specific drill size matched to the material and thread form - consult a thread forming drill chart before selecting the pilot hole diameter, as the correct hole size differs from standard cut-tap drill sizes. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil suited to the workpiece material; dry tapping is not recommended for steel applications. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is driven with a calibrated torque-limiting tap wrench or CNC tapping cycle to avoid overloading the tool. This tap is not designed for through-hole or chip-load applications where cut taps are more appropriate.
