The OSG 1405004108 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in a range of metallic materials. Manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap offers elevated hardness and wear resistance compared to standard HSS tooling. It carries an H4 thread limit and produces 8-32 UNC internal threads using a cold-forming action rather than cutting, which eliminates chips and produces stronger thread forms. The bottoming chamfer style - with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads - allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.125 inches. This tap is part of the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT series and is intended for use by machinists and toolroom professionals.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications in production machining, toolroom work, and repair environments. It is compatible with a broad range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The cold-forming method makes it particularly effective in ductile metals where chip control is a concern. Typical applications include tapping threaded inserts, fastener holes, and precision assemblies where thread strength and consistency are critical.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N apply per ISO material classification.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication and correct spindle speed for the workpiece material - consult OSG or material-specific tapping charts before use. Ensure the pilot hole diameter is correct for the forming tap, as forming taps require a larger pilot than cutting taps for the same thread size. Power down the machine and secure the workpiece before mounting or changing taps. This tap is intended for use by qualified machinists operating tapping machines, CNC machining centers, or manual drill presses with tapping attachments.
