The OSG 1405003808 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. It produces a 6-32 UNC thread using a modified bottoming chamfer, making it suited for blind hole applications where thread depth is critical. Constructed from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN), this tap delivers improved wear resistance and tool life compared to standard HSS taps. The H5 thread limit designates a close tolerance fit. Overall length is 2 inches, with a tapping depth of 0.685 inches. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical contractors use thread forming taps when working with ductile materials that can be displaced rather than cut.
This tap is intended for threading blind holes in materials compatible with cold-forming processes. Rated material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The right-hand thread direction and 2B class of fit make it a standard choice for general-purpose machine threading in manufacturing, HVAC component fabrication, and mechanical assembly work. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole without a separate bottoming operation.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring a 6-32 UNC internal thread.
Thread forming taps require precise pilot hole sizing to achieve the correct thread form and avoid tap breakage — consult published forming tap drill charts for the correct hole diameter before use. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless or hardened steel. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque-limiting driver or tapping head where possible to prevent overloading the tap. This tap is intended for use by skilled machinists or trade professionals familiar with thread forming operations.
