The OSG 1405003508 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, this bottoming-style tap displaces material rather than cutting chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. It is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and coated with TiCN for improved wear resistance and lubricity. With an overall length of 2 inches and a thread limit of H6, it is suited for tight-tolerance threading work in production and maintenance environments. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and precision fabricators are the typical users.
This tap is engineered for blind hole threading in a 6-32 UNC configuration with a right-hand thread direction. Its bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The EXOTAP VP-NRT design is rated for use across a broad range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, die steel, and hardened steel, making it a versatile choice for shops working with mixed material types or demanding threading jobs.
Designed for blind hole threading of 6-32 UNC threads in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N apply per ISO designation.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size optimized for form tapping, which differs from the drill size used with cut taps - consult the OSG EXOTAP VP-NRT drill size chart before drilling the pilot hole. Adequate lubrication or cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material is essential to prevent tap breakage and ensure proper thread form. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque-controlled tapping head or CNC rigid tapping cycle to avoid overloading the tap shank. Always follow applicable shop safety procedures when operating tapping equipment.
