The OSG 1405002508 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed to cut 4-40 UNC internal threads using a cold-forming process rather than cutting chips. Manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, it delivers extended tool life in demanding production and maintenance tapping applications. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. The H5 thread limit produces a Class 2B fit, meeting standard tolerance requirements for 4-40 fastener assemblies. Machinists and tool room technicians install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping fixtures.
This tap is rated for blind hole threading in a broad range of metallic workpiece materials, including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The EXOTAP VP-NRT design is suited for high-volume production environments where chip evacuation is a concern, since the forming process eliminates chips entirely. It is a right-hand tap compatible with standard 4-40 UNC tapping sequences in both production and maintenance settings.
Designed for blind hole threading in 4-40 UNC applications across alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N are supported per the manufacturer specification.
Install and operate this tap in accordance with the machine tool manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety procedures. Power down or de-energize tapping equipment before mounting or removing the tap from the holder. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material to maintain coating integrity and thread quality. Verify spindle speed and feed rate settings against published recommendations for the workpiece material before beginning the tapping cycle.
