The OSG 1405001208 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in a 2-56 UNC configuration. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and carries a TiCN coating for improved wear resistance and lubricity. It features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well-suited for blind hole applications where thread engagement close to the bottom of the bore is required. The H3 thread limit and Class 2B fit designation make this tap appropriate for general-purpose fastener work across a range of materials.
This tap is rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It is intended for blind hole threading operations in production and maintenance environments. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is engineered for use without coolant through the tool, making it compatible with standard tapping setups on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping arms. Right-hand thread direction is standard. The 2-56 UNC size is common in small fastener applications including instrument panels, electronics enclosures, and precision assemblies.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Designed for blind hole threading in 2-56 UNC right-hand thread applications across production machining and maintenance repair operations.
Thread forming taps require the correct tap drill size for the material and desired thread engagement — use the recommended forming tap drill chart for 2-56 UNC before tapping. Power down or de-energize any machine spindle before installing or changing the tap. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to extend tool life and achieve proper thread form. This tap should be installed and operated by a machinist or qualified trade professional familiar with tapping speeds, torque limitations, and thread gauging procedures.
