The OSG 1405000108 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in a wide range of metallic materials. Part of the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, it uses a cold-forming process rather than cutting, displacing material to create strong, chip-free internal threads. The tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and carries a TiCN coating for increased surface hardness and wear resistance. It is configured with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, making it well suited for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. With 80 threads per inch on a 0-80 UNF thread standard, this tap is used in precision small-fastener applications requiring a Class 2B fit and H3 thread limit.
This tap is intended for use in production and toolroom environments where blind hole threading of small-diameter fastener holes is required. Typical applications include machining of alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components. The bottoming configuration makes it appropriate for follow-up use after a plug or taper tap has been used to start the thread, or as a standalone tap where full thread depth near the hole bottom is required. It is suitable for CNC machining centers, manual mills, and tapping fixtures without coolant-through capability.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Suitable for use in any standard tapping setup accepting a 0-80 UNF bottoming tap with a 0.1410-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a standard cut tap drill size - consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct hole diameter before use. Secure the tap in a rigid holder or tapping head to maintain axial alignment and prevent tap breakage in this small diameter. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to reduce galling during the forming operation. Ensure the workpiece is firmly fixtured before beginning the tapping cycle.
