The OSG 1405000008 is a thread forming tap designed for 0-80 UNF blind hole threading applications. Unlike cutting taps, this bottoming-style forming tap displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from the bore. It is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) for consistent grain structure and extended tool life, and it carries a TiCN coating for added surface hardness and lubricity. With a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, it reaches close to the bottom of blind holes. The H2 thread limit ensures a Class 3B fit. Overall length is 1.6913 inches with a thread length of 0.3173 inches. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users.
This tap is suited for threading blind holes in a wide range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The EXOTAP VP-NRT series is engineered for form tapping in materials that work-harden or produce stringy chips, where a forming approach offers a process advantage over conventional cutting taps. It is commonly used in precision machining, mold and die work, aerospace component production, and any application requiring a strong 0-80 UNF internal thread in a confined bore.
Designed for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring a 0-80 UNF Class 3B internal thread in blind hole configurations.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - the recommended hole diameter is larger than the drill size used for a cutting tap of the same thread designation; consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts before drilling. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material before forming. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and use a calibrated torque driver or CNC tapping cycle with rigid tap holder to prevent overload on this small-diameter tap. Inspect the tap for wear or deformation regularly, as undersized or oversize holes will significantly shorten tool life.
