The OSG 1400158508 is a thread forming tap designed for 8-32 UNC threads with a modified bottoming chamfer. Made from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN, it is built for forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting chips. The modified bottoming chamfer features 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. With an H11 thread limit and right-hand thread direction, this tap suits precision threading operations in production and maintenance environments. It is installed by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance professionals working with hand or machine tapping setups.
This tap is rated for blind hole threading across a range of metallic workpiece materials. Its TiCN coating reduces friction and extends tool life in demanding applications. The 8-32 UNC thread form and overall length of 2.125 inches make it suitable for general-purpose threading in small fastener applications found in mechanical assemblies, enclosures, and precision fixtures. The shank diameter of 0.168 inches fits standard tap holders and tapping heads used in vertical mills, drill presses, and hand tap handles.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Designed for blind hole threading applications requiring 8-32 UNC internal threads. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14001 product line.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from cutting tap drill sizes — consult a forming tap drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Power down or de-energize any machine tool before securing the tap in the holder. Use a tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, especially when tapping hardened or stainless steel. Do not reverse the tap to break chips, as thread forming taps produce no chips and reversing mid-thread can gall or damage the formed thread.
