The OSG 1400157201 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile and malleable materials without cutting or producing chips. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, it produces a 10-32 UNF thread with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, allowing threads to be formed close to the bottom of a blind hole. The cobalt construction provides heat and wear resistance, and the steam oxide coating reduces friction and improves lubricity during the forming process. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a shank diameter of 0.194 inches. Installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in precision threading operations.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of metals. Applicable material groups include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, covering both P and N material application codes. The bottoming chamfer makes it particularly well suited for through-tapping to the base of shallow blind holes where full thread engagement near the bottom is required. It is commonly used in production machining, maintenance and repair operations, and tooling fabrication environments.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring a 10-32 UNF right-hand internal thread.
Thread forming taps require proper hole preparation with a recommended forming tap drill size, which differs from a cutting tap drill chart - consult the OSG HY-PRO NRT series drill size guidelines before drilling. Use a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless or hardened steel. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap is driven perpendicular to the work surface to avoid thread distortion. No coolant-through capability is present on this tap, so external lubrication at the tap entry is required.
