The OSG 1400157101 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this bottoming-style tap carries a H6 thread limit and produces 10-24 UNC right-hand threads. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 0.492-inch thread length, it is sized for compact blind-hole applications where a standard or plug chamfer cannot reach full thread depth. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians install this tap in CNC and manual tapping operations where chip evacuation is a concern.
This tap is rated for blind hole threading across a broad range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. The bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads makes it the correct choice when full threads are required close to the bottom of a blind hole. It is well-suited for production environments running tight-tolerance fastener holes in 10-24 UNC applications across automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking industries.
Designed for use in blind hole threading of alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill - consult a forming tap drill chart for the correct diameter before drilling. A qualified machinist or toolroom technician should set appropriate tapping speed and apply a suitable cutting or forming fluid for the workpiece material. Secure the tap in a rigid holder to prevent misalignment, and never reverse the tap under power without confirming the machine and toolholder support it. Follow shop safety procedures and applicable OSHA standards when operating tapping equipment.
