The OSG 1400152008 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT Series 14001, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting or removing material. It produces a 5/8-18 UNF right-hand thread using a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well suited for work close to the bottom of a hole. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating for increased surface hardness and wear resistance. Overall length is 3.813 inches with a shank diameter of 0.48 inches and an H7 thread limit. Machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping arms.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The thread forming method is preferred in these materials because it work-hardens the thread form, producing stronger threads with no chip generation. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability across steel and non-ferrous metal families. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading to within a short distance of the hole bottom, a common requirement in precision machined components and structural assemblies.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized form tap drill — the recommended hole diameter is larger than a standard cut tap drill and must be confirmed from the tap manufacturer's chart for the specific material being threaded. Cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material should be applied; do not run a thread forming tap dry in steel. This tap does not generate chips but requires adequate lubrication to prevent galling. Installation is performed by machinists and toolroom technicians; always confirm machine spindle speed and feed rate are set to values appropriate for the workpiece material and hole depth before engaging the tap.
