The OSG 1400151805 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 5/8-18 UNF internal threads in blind holes without cutting chips. It works by displacing and cold-forming material rather than removing it, resulting in stronger thread forms and eliminating the risk of chip packing in blind bores. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this tap handles demanding applications in alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and die steel. It belongs to OSG Series 14001 under the HY-PRO NRT trade name. Licensed trade machinists and tooling specialists are the primary installers and operators.
This tap is engineered for blind hole threading in production and job-shop environments where thread quality and tool life are critical. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole while maintaining controlled entry. It is suited for CNC machining centers, lathes, and tapping attachments where consistent torque control is available. Applicable materials include alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, covering both P and N material application codes.
Designed for 5/8-18 UNF blind hole threading applications in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Compatible with tapping attachments and CNC machine tool holders accepting a 0.4800-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole that is larger than a standard cut-tap drill to allow material displacement. Always apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before operation. Use a torque-controlled tapping head or CNC rigid tapping cycle to avoid overloading the tap, particularly at the bottom of a blind hole. Power down and secure the machine spindle before changing or inspecting the tap.
