The OSG 1400150008 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or removing material. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN), this tap is built for demanding threading applications where heat and wear resistance are critical. It carries a 5/8-11 UNC thread specification with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard taper or plug chamfer. With an H5 thread limit, it produces threads within a controlled tolerance range suited for precision fit requirements. Licensed machinists and tool and die professionals are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading operations in a range of metals including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Its modified bottoming chamfer makes it well suited for applications where full thread engagement close to the bottom of a blind hole is required. The TiCN coating extends tool life in abrasive and high-hardness materials. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is engineered specifically for thread forming in ductile metals where chipless threading is preferred to reduce the risk of chip contamination in the workpiece.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole — the recommended hole diameter differs from a standard cut tap drill size and must be confirmed before use. Adequate lubrication or tapping fluid is essential when forming threads, particularly in steel and stainless steel. Ensure the workpiece and tapping fixture are securely clamped before operation. Always power down or de-energize machine tooling before changing or inspecting taps.
