The OSG 1400148100 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-form threading in blind holes, producing strong, chip-free internal threads without cutting. Part of the HY-PRO NRT Series 14001, it is built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright coating and is engineered for right-hand threading in a 9/16-18 UNF configuration. The modified bottoming chamfer - 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads - allows threading close to the bottom of a blind bore. With an overall length of 3.594 inches and a 1-inch thread length, this tap suits precision metalworking and mechanical assembly applications where thread strength and hole integrity are critical. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations across a broad range of ferrous and non-ferrous base metals. It performs in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The H4 thread limit provides the proper tolerance class for controlled-fit threaded connections common in structural, hydraulic, and precision mechanical assemblies. The 9/16-18 UNF thread form is widely used in hydraulic fittings, fasteners, and equipment components where fine-thread engagement and vibration resistance are required.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Compatible with 9/16-18 UNF tapping applications requiring an H4 thread limit and modified bottoming entry geometry.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size - not the standard tapped-hole drill size used for cutting taps - so consult the OSG or tooling supplier drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter before use. Power-down all equipment and secure the workpiece before tool changes. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil suited to the workpiece material, particularly with stainless steel and hardened alloys, to reduce tool wear and extend tap life. Tap setup and operation should be performed by a qualified machinist following applicable shop safety procedures.
