The OSG 1400146601 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for 9/16-12 UNC right-hand threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile without removing material, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it well-suited for tight-tolerance work where thread depth matters. Class of fit is 3B with a H7 thread limit.
This tap is intended for use in production and maintenance machining environments where blind hole threading is required in tough ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The cobalt construction provides heat resistance and wear life in applications involving stainless steel, alloy steel, and hardened steel where standard high-speed steel taps wear prematurely. It is sized for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines with appropriate tap holders. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous alloy workpieces.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces per material application codes P and N. Part of OSG series 14001 HY-PRO NRT line.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size — do not use a standard cut tap drill chart, as the correct hole diameter is larger than for a cutting tap of the same thread. Adequate lubrication or cutting fluid is critical, particularly in stainless and alloy steel. Ensure the tap holder provides proper axial float to prevent thread distortion. Follow shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements when operating tapping equipment.
