The OSG 1400141800 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. Rather than removing material, it displaces metal to create strong, work-hardened threads. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, this tap handles the stress and heat of tapping alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum. The 7/16-20 UNF thread profile with a plug chamfer and H4 thread limit makes it a practical choice for through-hole threading applications where dimensional accuracy and thread integrity are critical. Machinists and toolroom professionals specify this tap for production and maintenance work where thread quality must hold up under load.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading in both production shop and maintenance environments. It performs on a range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum, making it versatile across common machining applications. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads allows gradual thread engagement, which reduces axial force and helps protect the workpiece at thread entry. It is compatible with standard tapping chucks, CNC rigid tapping setups, and manual tapping fixtures. Right-hand thread direction is standard. No coolant-through capability is required for typical applications within this tap's material range.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability across ferrous and non-ferrous material groups in these categories.
Thread forming taps require higher torque than cutting taps and must be used with a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate to the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece and verify drill hole size meets the recommended form tap pilot diameter for 7/16-20 UNF before starting. Use a calibrated torque-limiting tapping chuck or CNC rigid tapping cycle with feed-per-revolution synchronization to avoid tap fracture. Inspect the tap for galling or deformation after use in hardened or stainless steel materials.
