The OSG 1400141005 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. It produces 7/16-20 UNF right-hand threads using material displacement rather than chip removal, resulting in stronger thread forms and no chips to clear. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), it handles the heat and wear demands of production tapping. Overall length is 3.156 inches with a thread length of 0.858 inches and a shank diameter of 0.323 inches. The H5 thread limit suits close-tolerance work in precision assemblies.
This tap is rated for blind hole threading applications across a broad range of metals, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it well suited for tight-clearance components in machined parts and assemblies where thread depth is critical. It is used in job shops, production machining environments, and maintenance operations where consistent thread quality in tough materials is required.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steels and non-ferrous metals. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series 14001.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size that is larger than the drill used for cut taps of the same thread size — always consult a thread forming drill chart for 7/16-20 UNF before drilling. Install using a rigid or floating tap holder to prevent misalignment; use of a synchronous tapping attachment is recommended for CNC applications. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material, especially when working with stainless or hardened steel. Power down or de-energize the machine and secure the workpiece firmly before tool changes.
