The OSG 1400140405 is a thread forming tap designed to produce 7/16-14 UNC internal threads in ductile and malleable workpiece materials without cutting. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), this plug-chamfer tap delivers increased wear resistance and extended tool life in demanding production environments. The H8 thread limit provides the correct tolerance fit for standard UNC fasteners. With an overall length of 3.156 inches and a right-hand thread direction, this tap suits both manual and machine tapping applications. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, engineered specifically for thread forming in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads makes it appropriate for through-hole applications where the tap can pass fully through the workpiece. It performs well in production machining centers, CNC tapping operations, and manual drill press setups where consistent thread geometry and tool longevity are priorities.

Thread forming taps should be installed and operated by machinists or tooling technicians familiar with tapping speeds, torque limits, and lubrication requirements for the workpiece material. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the specific workpiece material to reduce heat buildup and galling. Verify spindle alignment before beginning the tapping cycle to prevent tap breakage or thread distortion.
