The OSG 1400137405 is a thread forming tap designed for producing internal threads without cutting, using material displacement instead of chip removal. Sized for 3/8-24 UNF threads, this tap features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well suited for blind hole applications where thread depth close to the bottom of a hole is required. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiN (titanium nitride), it delivers improved hardness and wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. It carries a Class 3B fit and H5 thread limit for close-tolerance threading work. Right-hand thread direction. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading operations in machining environments. It performs across a broad range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threads to be formed closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug or taper tap, reducing the need for additional operations. Typical applications include precision machined components in industrial manufacturing, automotive, and tooling fabrication contexts where tight thread tolerances are required.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Produces 3/8-24 UNF internal threads to Class 3B fit. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series (Series 14001).
Installation is performed by machinists or toolroom technicians using a tapping machine, CNC machining center, or hand tap wrench with appropriate tap holder. Ensure the pilot hole diameter is correctly sized for thread forming taps, which require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps for the same thread size. Coolant through is not available on this tap; apply cutting fluid externally as required by the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece fully before operation and verify spindle alignment to avoid tap breakage.
