The OSG 1400137300 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in a range of metals without cutting or removing material. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, it runs the 3/8-24 UNF thread form with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 thread pitches. This geometry allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. With an H4 thread limit and right-hand thread direction, it suits precision work where tight tolerance control is required. Machinists and tooling professionals install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping fixtures across production and job-shop environments.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications in a broad range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The cold-forming process displaces rather than cuts material, producing stronger threads with better surface finish compared to cut taps. It is a practical choice for production runs in automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking where thread strength and consistency matter. The 3/8-24 UNF pitch is common in fine-thread fastener applications requiring high clamp load in thin-wall or high-strength components.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size — consult published forming tap drill charts for the correct diameter before drilling. Secure the tap in a tapping chuck or rigid holder with appropriate torque control to avoid overloading the tap shank. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material. Inspect the tap for wear or galling regularly, especially when working hardened or stainless steel grades.
