The OSG 1400136205 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. It operates on a 3/8-16 UNC thread standard with a plug chamfer of 4 to 4.5 threads, making it well-suited for through-hole threading applications. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this tap delivers added hardness and heat resistance compared to standard HSS tooling. The H7 thread limit and 2B class of fit make it appropriate for general-purpose threaded assemblies requiring consistent dimensional control. Overall length is 2.9380 inches with a tapping depth of 1.2520 inches.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading in a range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Its thread-forming action displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with a work-hardened surface. It is a practical choice for production machining, maintenance, and toolroom environments where chip-free tapping is preferred. Right-hand thread direction is standard. Applicable material codes are P and N.
Designed for through-hole thread forming in workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, per OSG HY-PRO NRT series specifications.
Thread forming taps are installed by machinists and toolroom technicians using a tapping machine, CNC machining center, or manual tap wrench with proper alignment to the pilot hole. Because this tap forms rather than cuts threads, the pilot hole diameter must be sized correctly per thread-forming tap drill charts — using a standard cut-tap drill size will result in improper thread form or tap breakage. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before starting. Ensure the spindle speed, feed rate, and torque settings are appropriate for the tap diameter and workpiece material before engaging the tap.
