The OSG 1400135108 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting or producing chips. Sized at 3/8-16 UNC with a Modified Bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, this tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating for increased surface hardness and heat resistance. The right-hand thread geometry conforms to a Class 3B fit at an H5 thread limit, delivering tight, consistent threads suited for precision assemblies. Machinists and tooling specialists install this tap in CNC machining centers and tapping machines.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications across a range of materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The Modified Bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes, making it practical for applications where thread depth and clearance are tightly constrained. The TiCN coating extends tool life in abrasive and high-strength materials. It suits production environments in aerospace, automotive, industrial fabrication, and general machining where thread quality and repeatability are critical.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel (Material Application Codes P and N). Designed for blind hole threading operations on tapping machines and CNC machining centers using standard 3/8-inch tap holders.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — standard twist drill charts do not apply; consult the tap manufacturer's forming tap drill size recommendations for 3/8-16 UNC. Adequate lubrication or cutting fluid is critical for tool life, particularly in steel and stainless steel; verify fluid compatibility with TiCN-coated tooling. Confirm spindle speed and feed rate are set per the material being tapped, as thread forming generates higher torque than cutting taps. No coolant-through capability on this tool; external flood or brush lubrication is required.
