The OSG 1400135101 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming 3/8-16 UNC internal threads without cutting chips. Made from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum. It features a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, allowing thread formation close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H5 thread limit and Class 3B fit make it suitable for precision threading applications where tight tolerances are required. Overall length is 2.9380 inches with a tapping depth of 1.2520 inches.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in production and maintenance environments across metalworking trades. It is well suited for machining shops, toolrooms, and field maintenance operations working with alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum components. The right-hand thread direction and standard square drive shank make it compatible with conventional tapping machines, CNC machining centers, and hand tap wrenches. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous metal families.
Designed for blind hole threading applications in alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum workpieces. Suitable for use with standard 3/8-16 UNC tapping equipment across material application codes P and N.
Thread forming taps should be installed by machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with tapping speeds and feed rates appropriate to the workpiece material. Always ensure the spindle or tap wrench is properly aligned to the drilled hole before starting to avoid tap breakage. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil compatible with the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Do not use thread forming taps in pre-drilled holes sized for cutting taps, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole diameter.
