The OSG 1400134508 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with no chips. This bottoming-style tap carries a 1 to 1.5 thread chamfer, allowing it to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, the 1400134508 handles elevated heat and wear better than standard HSS taps. It is suited for use by machinists and maintenance technicians working in production, toolroom, and repair environments.
This tap is designed for blind hole threading applications across a range of metals. Its H5 thread limit and 3B class of fit make it appropriate for precision threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. The right-hand thread direction and 3/8-16 UNC specification are common in structural and mechanical fastener applications across manufacturing, aerospace maintenance, and industrial repair work. The bottoming chamfer is especially useful when thread engagement must reach close to a hole floor.

Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size — do not use a standard tap drill chart; consult an NRT-specific drill chart for the correct hole diameter before tapping. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material, particularly when working stainless or hardened steel. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned square to the hole axis before engaging. Use a calibrated torque-limiting tap driver or CNC rigid tapping cycle to avoid tool breakage in bottoming applications.
