The OSG 1400131805 is a thread forming tap designed for creating internal threads in through-hole applications without cutting chips. Operating on a cold-forming principle, it displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with a smoother finish. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it handles demanding materials and extended production runs. The plug chamfer style with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads allows gradual thread engagement, reducing torque requirements on entry. At 2.719 inches overall length with a 0.6654-inch thread length and H7 thread limit, it is sized for standard 5/16-18 UNC threading operations in machine shop and production environments.
This tap is suited for right-hand through-hole threading in a wide range of metalworking applications. It performs across multiple material groups, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The TiN coating extends tool life in abrasive and harder materials. Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — the recommended hole diameter differs from a standard cut tap drill and must be calculated for the specific material and thread size. Power down or lock out all equipment before loading or removing tooling. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tool life. Installation and tooling changes should be performed by qualified machinists following shop safety procedures.
