The OSG 1400131700 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Operating on a 5/16-18 UNC thread standard with a plug chamfer and H6 thread limit, this tap displaces material rather than removing it, resulting in stronger threads and longer tap life in compatible workpiece materials. The cobalt construction provides heat and wear resistance for demanding applications. With an overall length of 2.719 inches and a tapping depth of 1.126 inches, it is suited for through-hole threading operations on CNC machining centers and manual tap handles alike. Installation is performed by machinists and tool and die professionals.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads allows easy starting in a pre-drilled through hole. It is a right-hand thread forming tap suitable for production environments where chip-free tapping is required, such as aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing shops working with close-tolerance threaded assemblies.
Designed for through-hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N indicate suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups per standard ISO classification.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size for the same thread - consult the OSG HY-PRO NRT drill chart for the correct forming drill diameter before starting. Power down or lock out any machine tool before mounting or removing the tap from the holder. Use a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material to reduce galling, particularly in stainless steel and hardened steel. This operation is typically performed by machinists or tool and die technicians following applicable shop safety and machining standards.
