The OSG 1400130705 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading applications in a wide range of metallic materials. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, it cuts a 5/16-18 UNC right-hand thread using a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing the tap to start close to the bottom of a blind hole. The cobalt construction with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating provides heat resistance and wear life suited for demanding threading operations in alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and aluminum. Overall length is 2.719 inches with a shank diameter of 0.318 inches and a thread limit of H5.
This tap is intended for production and maintenance threading in blind holes across ferrous and non-ferrous base metals. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it well suited for applications where thread depth is critical and full thread engagement near the bottom of a bore is required. It is commonly used by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working with CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping arms.

Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size larger than that used for cut taps — consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Adequate cutting fluid or tapping compound should be applied to extend tool life and reduce galling, particularly in stainless steel. Power down or de-energize any CNC spindle or tapping unit before installing or removing the tap from the holder. Verify machine spindle speed and feed rate are set to manufacturer recommendations for the workpiece material before beginning the tapping cycle.
