The OSG 1400130508 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting, producing stronger threads by displacing material rather than removing it. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN), this tap handles demanding applications in alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum. It carries a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H3 thread limit ensures dimensional consistency across production runs. With an overall length of 2.719 inches and a shank diameter of 0.318 inches, this tap fits standard tap holders used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations in both production and job-shop environments. The 5/16-18 UNC thread form is a common fastener size across structural, mechanical, and industrial assemblies. Its right-hand thread direction matches standard machine tapping setups. The TiCN coating reduces friction and extends tool life when running in abrasive or work-hardening materials such as stainless steel and hardened steel. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is engineered for roll-form tapping in ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring a 5/16-18 UNC internal thread. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, Series 14001.
This tap is installed by machinists using standard tap holders or CNC tapping attachments sized for a 0.318-inch shank diameter. Ensure the spindle and workpiece are properly secured before tapping. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat buildup and extend tool life. Confirm hole diameter and depth meet the thread forming requirements for 5/16-18 UNC before starting the operation.
