The OSG 1400130500 is a thread forming tap from the HY-PRO NRT series, designed to cold-form 5/16-18 UNC internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Thread forming taps displace material rather than removing it, resulting in stronger thread walls and eliminating chip-related tap breakage. This tap features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. It is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish and carries a H3 thread limit. Overall length is 2.719 inches with a tapping depth of 1.126 inches. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in CNC machines, drill presses, and hand-tapping fixtures.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It is particularly effective in materials where chip evacuation is problematic or where thread strength is critical. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it a practical choice for production runs requiring threads near the base of shallow blind bores. Right-hand threading direction makes it compatible with standard clockwise-driven tapping heads and CNC tapping cycles.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability across these material groups. Part of OSG Series 14001 HY-PRO NRT thread forming tap line.
Thread forming taps require a specifically sized forming tap drill — consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct pre-drill diameter for 5/16-18 UNC before setup. Always apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material; forming taps generate higher torque than cutting taps and adequate lubrication is essential. Ensure the tapping spindle or CNC cycle is synchronized to 18 threads per inch to prevent tap damage or thread distortion. Inspect the tap for wear regularly, as cobalt taps can chip rather than deform when worn, which can damage the workpiece thread.
