The OSG 1400130108 is a bottoming-chamfer thread forming tap designed for 5/16-18 UNC right-hand threads in blind hole applications. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride), it delivers the hardness and lubricity needed for forming internal threads without cutting a chip. The bottoming chamfer — 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads — allows threading to the bottom of a blind hole with minimal clearance. Thread limit is H7, suited for tight-tolerance work. Overall length is 2.719 inches with a shank diameter of 0.318 inches. This tap is used by machinists and tooling technicians across production and maintenance environments.
This tap is rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Its thread forming — rather than cutting — action displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from the hole. It is well suited for CNC tapping centers, manual drill presses, and hand tapping operations where blind holes require threading close to the bottom of the bore. The HY-PRO NRT series from OSG is targeted at shops running mixed-material jobs that need consistent thread quality across ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum per OSG material application codes P and N. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series (Series 14001).
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size for the material and thread form — use the correct forming tap drill chart rather than standard cut-tap drill tables, as the recommended hole diameter differs. Apply tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material before starting; TiCN coating reduces but does not eliminate the need for lubrication in ferrous materials. Ensure the spindle or tap guide is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface before engagement to avoid thread lean or tap breakage. When tapping blind holes, set a depth stop to prevent the tap from bottoming out under torque.
