The OSG 1400130100 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-form tapping of blind holes in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Unlike cutting taps, this bottoming-style forming tap displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger, chip-free threads with a 5/16-18 UNC profile. It is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and carries a bright finish with a thread limit of H7. With an overall length of 2.719 inches and a tapping depth of 1.126 inches, it is suited for production and maintenance machining environments where thread integrity and tool life are priorities. Machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users.
This tap is built for blind hole threading in materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The bottoming chamfer — 1 to 1.5 threads — allows forming to begin very close to the bottom of a blind hole, maximizing usable thread depth. It is appropriate for both CNC machining centers and manual drill press or tapping operations where controlled feed rate and proper tap lubricant are applied. Applications span automotive, tooling, and general metalworking production.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces per material application codes P and N. Produces 5/16-18 UNC right-hand threads to H7 tolerance.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size that is larger than the drill size used for cutting taps — consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart for 5/16-18 UNC before drilling. A quality tapping lubricant or cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material should be applied to reduce forming forces and extend tap life. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole before engagement. Worn or broken taps should be replaced promptly, as forming taps in blind holes cannot be easily backed out if they seize.
