The OSG 1400130005 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting or producing chips. Sized for 5/16-18 UNC right-hand threads, this bottoming chamfer tap starts forming threads within 1 to 1.5 pitches of the bottom of the hole, maximizing usable thread depth in closed-end applications. The tap is constructed from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating to extend tool life and reduce friction during forming. It carries a Thread Limit of H6, making it appropriate for precision thread tolerance requirements. Licensed machinists, toolmakers, and CNC operators are the typical users.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It is rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The bottoming chamfer design makes it a direct choice when maximum thread engagement is required near the bottom of a drilled blind hole, a common demand in fixture work, die and mold repair, and structural component manufacturing. It is equally applicable in manual tapping setups and rigid CNC tapping cycles.

Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size — consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct pre-drill diameter before use, as a standard tap drill will produce incorrect thread form. Verify spindle RPM and apply appropriate tapping lubricant or cutting fluid matched to the workpiece material before starting the cycle. Rigid tapping mode is strongly recommended on CNC equipment to prevent tap breakage. Always bring the machine to a complete stop and ensure all energy sources are isolated before changing tooling.
