The OSG 1400127405 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this tap handles demanding materials and extended production runs. It is configured as a plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads, a right-hand thread direction, and conforms to the 1/4-20 UNC thread standard at an H7 thread limit. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a thread length of 0.594 inches. Machinists and toolroom professionals install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping setups.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading applications across a broad range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The cold-forming action displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chip evacuation concerns. It is appropriate for both production and job-shop environments where a reliable, high-performance 1/4-20 UNC form tap is required. The HY-PRO NRT series is engineered for use in materials designated under application codes P and N.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Compatible with standard 1/4-20 UNC tapping applications requiring an H7 thread limit.
Thread forming taps require proper tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to prevent galling, particularly in stainless steel and hardened steel. Ensure the tap driver or chuck is sized to the 0.255-inch shank diameter and that the square drive measures 0.191 inches. Verify spindle speed and feed rate are set for cold-forming operations, as thread forming taps require higher torque than cutting taps. Power down or de-energize all machine motion before changing or inspecting tooling.
