The OSG 1400127308 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. Unlike cutting taps, it displaces material to produce stronger threads with improved surface finish. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN for extended tool life and heat resistance, this tap is suited for demanding production and job-shop environments. At 1/4-20 UNC with a plug chamfer of 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads, it provides controlled thread engagement. The H6 thread limit ensures dimensional accuracy for standard tolerance applications. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a thread length of 0.594 inches and a shank diameter of 0.255 inches.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading applications across a broad range of materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The plug chamfer makes it well suited for through-hole work where the tap can advance progressively into the workpiece. It is commonly used in machine shop, manufacturing, and maintenance environments where consistent thread quality and tap longevity are required. Licensed machinists and tool and die professionals typically install and operate this tooling in CNC tapping machines, drill presses, or manual tap handles.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces where 1/4-20 UNC internal threads are required.
Thread forming taps require proper tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material; dry tapping is not recommended. Ensure the tapping machine or tap handle is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece to prevent tap breakage. Tapping depth should not exceed the rated capacity of the machine setup; the maximum tapping depth for this tap is 0.933 inches. Follow applicable shop safety practices and machine guarding requirements when operating powered tapping equipment.
