The OSG 1400126408 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. Rather than removing material, it displaces metal to produce stronger, chip-free threads. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap handles demanding materials and extended production runs. It carries a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing thread formation close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H6 thread limit supports close-tolerance fits. Overall length is 2.5 inches, thread length is 0.594 inches, and shank diameter is 0.255 inches. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications across a range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it well suited for holes with limited depth clearance. The TiCN coating reduces friction and extends tool life when forming threads in harder or abrasive alloys. It is sized for 1/4-20 UNC right-hand threads and fits standard tap holders and CNC tapping heads accepting the corresponding shank and square drive geometry.
Designed for use in blind hole threading of alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 1/4-20 UNC right-hand threads. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, Series 14001.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, which differs from standard cut tap drill charts — verify the correct drill diameter for the material and desired thread engagement before use. Power down or disengage the machine spindle before loading or removing the tap from the holder. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material to reduce galling and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for wear or surface damage before each use, as thread forming tools are sensitive to overloading in harder materials.
