The OSG 1400126201 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal 1/4-20 UNC threads without cutting or generating chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger, work-hardened threads in ductile materials. The modified bottoming chamfer — 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads — allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. With an overall length of 2.5 inches, a thread length of 0.594 inches, and a tapping depth of 0.933 inches, it is sized for standard machine tapping operations in production and maintenance environments. Installation is performed by machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications in a wide range of materials. The H4 thread limit makes it appropriate for work requiring close tolerance fits. Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, it covers the material mix common in general machining, fabrication, and toolroom work. The right-hand thread direction is standard for the majority of fastener applications encountered in these trades.
Designed for blind hole threading operations producing 1/4-20 UNC right-hand internal threads in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, Series 14001.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — standard cut tap drill sizes are not correct for forming taps and will produce out-of-tolerance threads. Ensure adequate lubrication or cutting fluid is applied before and during tapping to protect the tap and the workpiece. Power down or de-energize any CNC or power tapping equipment before loading or changing tooling. Follow shop safety practices and applicable OSHA machine guarding requirements when operating tapping equipment.
