The OSG 1400126108 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile metals without cutting or producing chips. Sized for 1/4-20 UNC threads, this tap features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it suitable for blind hole applications where thread engagement close to the bottom of the hole is required. It is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, which improves surface hardness and reduces friction during the forming process. The H3 thread limit designates the tolerance class for the produced thread. Installation is performed by machinists and tool-and-die technicians using standard tapping equipment.
This tap is rated for use in blind hole threading across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. Suitable material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, corresponding to ISO material application codes P and N. The modified bottoming geometry allows thread formation closer to the blind hole floor compared to a standard plug chamfer. This makes the 1400126108 a practical choice for precision machining environments, toolroom work, and production tapping operations where close-tolerance 1/4-20 UNC threads are required in tough or abrasive materials.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 1/4-20 UNC internal threads.
Thread forming taps require proper lubrication and a correctly sized forming hole, which is typically larger than a cutting tap drill size — consult a forming tap drill chart for the correct hole diameter before use. Power down or disengage the tapping spindle before changing tooling. Right-hand taps must be run in the correct rotational direction; reversing rotation is required to back the tap out of the hole. Secure workpieces firmly and use a tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to maximize tap life and thread quality.
