The OSG 1400123305 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiN coating, it handles demanding materials while maintaining edge integrity over extended production runs. The plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads provides a controlled lead-in for through-hole threading applications. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 0.496-inch thread length and H6 thread limit, this tap is suited for precision threading in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians working on production runs or repair work install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines.
This tap is used for through-hole threading in materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The thread forming method displaces material rather than cutting it, which produces stronger threads with a work-hardened surface. It is well suited for production threading in both job shop and manufacturing environments where thread quality and tap longevity are priorities. Right-hand thread direction applies to standard UNC 12-24 applications.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups. Part of the OSG Series 14001 HY-PRO NRT tap line.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size for the same thread - consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct hole diameter before tapping. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is aligned axially with the drilled hole to prevent tap breakage. Use a threading fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce forming forces and extend tap life. Always retract the tap fully and inspect for wear after completing production runs in harder materials.
