The OSG 1400121501 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 10-32 UNF internal threads in through-hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. This tap belongs to the HY-PRO NRT series and is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating. The plug chamfer style — with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads — makes it suitable for through-hole threading where the tap can pass fully through the workpiece. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians typically use this tap in CNC tapping, turret lathes, and hand-tapping setups.
This tap is rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The thread limit is H6 with a Class 2B fit, making it appropriate for standard commercial and industrial fastener thread tolerances. It is suited to production machining environments where thread quality and tap longevity in tough materials are priorities. The overall length of 2.375 inches and shank diameter of 0.194 inches fit standard tap holders for this size range. Right-hand thread direction is standard.
Designed for through-hole threading of 10-32 UNF threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping feeds, speeds, and proper tap holder alignment. Ensure the spindle and tap holder are properly aligned to prevent tap breakage, particularly in harder materials. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before and during the tapping operation. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace when thread quality degrades.
