The OSG 1400120700 is a cobalt thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for 10-32 UNF right-hand blind hole threading applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. The modified bottoming chamfer — 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads — allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole. With an H7 thread limit and bright finish, this tap is suited for shops running tight-tolerance production work across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous base metals. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a tapping depth of 0.866 inches.
This tap is built for threading blind holes in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The cobalt construction handles the elevated heat and tool pressure that come with forming threads in tougher alloys. It fits standard tap handles and machine tapping setups used in general machining, toolroom work, and production environments where 10-32 UNF fastener threads are required. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it particularly useful when thread engagement must reach close to the hole floor.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 10-32 UNF right-hand internal threads. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require proper hole preparation — consult the material-specific recommended forming tap drill size chart before drilling, as the pilot hole diameter differs from a standard cut-tap drill size. Install in a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC tapping cycle with rigid or floating holder as appropriate for the machine setup. Apply a quality tapping compound or cutting fluid suited to the workpiece material, particularly when working stainless or hardened steel. Verify spindle direction and feed rate before engaging the tap to avoid tap breakage in blind holes.
