The OSG 1400120401 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting. Unlike cut taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with a burnished finish. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, die steel, and aluminum. It is configured for 10-32 UNF threads with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in production and maintenance machining environments. The 10-32 UNF thread size is common in precision assemblies across aerospace, industrial equipment, and electronics manufacturing where fine-pitch threads are required in tight spaces. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading nearer to the bottom of a blind hole compared to a standard plug chamfer. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability across a broad range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials.

Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size calculated for forming, not cutting — consult OSG or a standard tap drill chart for the correct forming drill diameter for 10-32 UNF. Adequate lubrication or cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material is essential to prevent galling and tap failure. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque-controlled tapping head or CNC spindle where possible to avoid overloading the tap. Always follow applicable shop safety procedures and ensure the spindle is fully stopped before handling the tap.
