The OSG 1400120208 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile and malleable metals without cutting or removing material. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material to produce stronger, work-hardened threads. This tap is configured for 10-32 UNF right-hand threads with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, making it well-suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. It is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating for added surface hardness and wear resistance. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines.

This tap is used in blind hole threading applications across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Installation Notes

Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, which is larger than the drill size used for cutting taps of the same thread designation — consult the tap manufacturer drill chart before machining the pilot hole. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce forming forces and extend tap life. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the surface before beginning the tapping cycle. Do not use this tap in brittle materials such as cast iron, where thread forming is not applicable.
