The OSG 1400120005 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal 10-32 UNF threads in blind holes. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. Made from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiN coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel. The bottoming chamfer — 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads — allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a shank diameter of 0.194 inches. It carries a Class 3B fit and H4 thread limit for precision thread production.
This tap is suited for machining and fabrication applications requiring tight-tolerance 10-32 UNF threads in blind holes across a range of materials: alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Typical applications include component manufacturing, tooling fabrication, and precision assembly work where thread integrity and pull-out strength are critical. The right-hand thread direction and bottoming chamfer profile make it appropriate for short blind hole depths where a plug or taper chamfer would leave unthreaded material at the bottom.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 10-32 UNF internal threads. Material application codes P and N indicate suitability for steel and non-ferrous materials respectively.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole — use the recommended tap drill chart for 10-32 UNF form taps, as the drill size differs from cutting tap recommendations. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before tapping. Secure the workpiece fully before operation and use a calibrated torque-controlled tapping driver or CNC tapping cycle to avoid tap breakage. This tap is intended for use by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel familiar with thread forming processes.
