The OSG 1400120001 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal 10-32 UNF threads in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with improved surface finish. This tap is built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating to resist wear and reduce friction during the forming process. The bottoming chamfer — with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads — allows threading to the bottom of blind holes with minimal runout. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a tapping depth of 0.866 inches. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and production shop operators are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications in production and job-shop environments. Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, it covers a broad range of workpiece materials commonly encountered in manufacturing and fabrication. The 10-32 UNF thread standard is widely used in precision fastener applications including instrument panels, electronics enclosures, and light structural assemblies. Class of fit is 3B with a thread limit of H4, making it appropriate where controlled fit tolerance is required. Thread direction is right hand. Coolant-through capability is not included in this configuration.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series (Series 14001).
Thread forming taps require a specific forming drill size — do not use a standard tap drill chart designed for cutting taps, as the hole size requirement is different. Power down or fully stop the spindle before changing tooling. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate to the workpiece material to reduce forming forces and extend tap life. Hardened steel applications should be verified against the tap's rated hardness range before use.
