The OSG 1400119900 is a bottoming-style thread forming tap designed for 10-32 UNF internal threads. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. Made from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and aluminum. It carries an H3 thread limit and a Class 3B fit designation, making it suitable for precision threading applications where close tolerances are required. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread length of 0.492 inches and a tapping depth of 0.866 inches.
This tap is used for blind hole threading in materials that benefit from cold-forming rather than chip-producing operations. Typical applications include threading tapped holes in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components. The bottoming chamfer — 1 to 1.5 threads — allows threading to the bottom of a blind hole, which is critical in close-tolerance assemblies where thread engagement near the bottom of the bore is required. It belongs to the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, built for shop and production environments where consistent thread quality matters.
Designed for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 10-32 UNF internal threads. Material application codes P and N apply per OSG classification.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — standard drill charts for cut taps do not apply, as forming taps need a slightly larger pilot hole to allow material displacement. A machine tool, tapping arm, or CNC with rigid tapping capability is recommended for consistent results. Use a lubricant or cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly for stainless and alloy steels. Secure the workpiece firmly before operation and verify spindle alignment to avoid tap breakage in blind holes.
